Tertiary, or enhanced, oil recovery
is expensive and involves the use of chemicals to mobilize trapped oil
or heat to thin the oil so it flows more freely. An additional 5% to
15% of the oil in a reservoir is produced during this stage. So, after
primary, secondary and tertiary oil recovery techniques have been
applied on the order of 50% of the oil in the reservoir is recovered.
